Corruption creeps in at the edges of the screen as Spaghetti, the little underdog with big dreams of being worthy, struggles on their journey.įor all its colourful (yet black and white) cartoon characters, Chicory isn’t afraid to delve into darkness through its frank and touching writing. The game spins the cliché of the troubled and tormented artist into a relatable tale of self-doubt, depression and perfectionism, of finding purpose and being vulnerable, of not only leaving your own legacy but living up to those who came before. Visually Chicory is all cute animal characters, but beneath that is a poignant tale of mental health. Between delicate woodwinds and lilting guitars, the music ranges from heroic to melancholic in true Zelda fashion. There are some musical moments, like sonic feedback against bosses and even a singing minigame, but more so the intimate small ensemble score from Celeste composer Lena Raine really drives the atmosphere. The focus on artistic creativity extends to the music as well. And you’ll need to defeat some ingeniously designed bosses that put your painting and positioning skills to the test – including a brilliant take on the familiar “mirrored self” boss trope.

There’s even an elf hat to wear!Ĭollecting new power ups for the brush allows you to explore more of the overworld as well as puzzle-filled dungeon areas.
#CHICORY A COLORFUL TALE GUIDE SERIES#
The magic paintbrush certainly has shades of Okami, but it’s the Zelda series that’s most influential here – specifically Link’s Awakening in its phone booth hints and cute, almost dreamlike, feel. At the end of the game, an overview of the map shows off your final masterpiece. You can even use collected pre-shape styles (and design your own) in your artistic endeavours. Later you can swim across surfaces in your paint like a Splatoon squid.īut equally, you can simply paint the world however you like and then take a seat on one of the many benches to admire your handiwork. Naturally this is done to solve puzzles in the world: by painting or erasing, platforms can be moved, pathways uncovered, or exploding bubbles can be triggered. The game takes place in a top-down view, and with the right stick and a squeeze of a trigger paint can be sploshed over every surface, like a giant interactive colouring book. That’s because of its central painting mechanic. So IDK if in my case it's an issue caused by Salt or not, but I don't think so because I never swapped anything with him and I can't swap anymore. As with designer Greg Lobanov’s previous game Wandersong, Chicory is one of those rare games where just controlling it is fun.

So I guess we can't take it like "you found all the clothes but you are at 119/120 then it's bugued".

there's nothing to swap!!".Īnd for information, even if he says "It looks like ALL clothes out there have been found", He was already telling me that when I found all the clothes in the gifts (confirmed by Beetroot) but didn't get the clothes in the quests/dialogues yet (like the Pistachio's clothes). Well personnaly I never swapped anything with Salt, but when I talk to him he always says "It looks like ALL clothes out there have been found already! Or at least, in the areas we currently service. I tried to swap something else out for the headband, but that did not restore Beetroot's interaction with me, and now I also don't have the duplicate headband (swapping it back out now shows the headband no long in my collection). Given the the headband is a quest reward, I must have traded it at some point, and I suspect the initial swap did not remove the headband from my inventory. I think the bug might be caused by swapping the headband for another piece of clothing: I noticed that Salt still had the headband available to swap, but if I checked my inventory, I also still had the headband in my inventory to use. Mom keeps telling me to look for clothing though.
